糞虫に夢中

今日は、奈良公園で開催された「奈良ひとまち大学」主催の
『糞虫（むんちゅう）に夢中！
　　　　　 〜聖地・奈良公園で観察ツアー〜』
　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　に参加できました。

　　　　　　　　　

奈良公園の1400頭の鹿は、1日1トンの糞をします。
「糞虫」がその1トンを毎日処理してくれています。

コガネムシ(gold beetle) の大きな分類は、「何を食べているか」で
区別するとのこと。

コガネムシの中で植物の葉や樹液ではなく、
糞を主食にしているコガネムシは「糞虫（ふんちゅう）」として分類される、
と講師（ならまち昆虫館の中村先生）から教わりました。

実際に、割りばしと紙コップを持ち、各自鹿の糞をめくりながら、コガネムシ捜しをしました。
私も一匹、発見しました。

Nara Park is 660 ha, which is six times the size of the Imperial Palace site. 
However, this park is always kept clean and well-arranged with a little cost thanks to its eco system.  

In Nara Park, lawn mowers are not necessary because the deer kindly eat the grass all through the year.

Then the deer produce approximately 300 tons of droppings each year.

However, the Nara City does not need to cope with them so much.

It is “kogane-mushi” or Japanese gold beetles that decompose the deer’s droppings and fertilize the soil in the park.

In Nara Park, there are about 40 different types of gold beetles (kogane-mushi in Japanese), which feed on the deer’s droppings and create enough fertilizer for the grass in the park every year.

Thanks to the deer and the gold beetles, this park is maintained well all the time.

According to a recent newspaper article, this natural cycle saves Nara City about 10 billion yen a year for its park maintenance costs.

公園は660haの広さがあり、それは皇居の6倍の広さに当たります。しかし、奈良公園は、公園の生態系のお陰で、少ないコストでいつもきれいでよく整理されています。

奈良公園では、芝刈機は不要です。それは鹿が年中、草を食べてくれるからです。

そして鹿は毎年300トンの排泄物を排出します。

しかし、奈良市はその処理をそんなにする必要はありません。

鹿の排泄物を分解し、公園内の土壌に施肥にしてくれるのは、コガネムシなのです。

奈良公園には、約40種類のコガネムシがいて、鹿の排泄物を食べ、1年間分の肥料を作り出してくれます。

鹿とコガネムシのお陰で、公園は常に管理されています。

最近の新聞によると、この自然サイクルにより奈良市は公園の維持にかかる費用の300億円を毎年節約できていると言われています。

日本で見られる「オオセンチコガネ」は、普通は「赤色」か「緑色」だそうです。
しかし、奈良公園にだけ、「瑠璃色」の「オオセンチコガネ」が生息していると知りました。

　　　　　　　　　
　　　　　　　　　　　

実際にその美しさを目の当たりにしました。
多くの女性受講生から、「綺麗ー」「かわいいー」と歓声が起こっていました。

とても有意義な一日でした。
よく歩いた一日でした。
